Statistics Assistant Professor - Tenure Track

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics to commence in August 2010. The successful candidate will teach courses in statistics, including introductory statistics, upper division undergraduate courses in probability and statistics, and will collaborate with faculty in applied statistics in various disciplinary areas. He/she will develop curriculum, advise and mentor students, and conduct research that involves undergraduate students.

The Mathematics and Statistics Department offers a B.S. in Mathematics with concentrations in Pure Mathematics and Mathematics Education, and a minor in Mathematics. A minor in Statistics is under development. The mathematics faculty work collaboratively to provide a supportive learning environment for students. Responsibilities:
A typical teaching load consists of 12 hours (usually 3 courses) per semester. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The preferred candidate will work closely with faculty as part of an interdisciplinary team to strengthen and build out a new Statistics minor, which is under development. In addition, the candidate will foster and oversee undergraduate research in statistics, and will advise and mentor students. The successful candidate will likely teach the capstone research seminar for seniors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in statistics or quantitative science with an emphasis in statistics.
  • Record of successful research in statistics or quantitative science
  • Ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate statistics
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate research and/or internships.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience in curriculum development and advising.
  • Experience in writing grant proposals.

Instructional Student Assistants
Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs) are CSUMB students trained to provide in-class student assistance and faculty support for MATH 98/99, MATH 100, and MATH 130, MATH 150, MATH 151 and STAT 100 courses. They are responsible for assisting during specific class sessions, as well as staffing open lab hours, grading student papers, and helping to track student academic progress in the course.
