MATH 98/99 Intensive Workshop
For information on the MATH 98/99 Intensive Workshop, please go to http://mathonline.csumb.edu/mathworkshop

All undergraduate students must take the Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM) or be exempted from it prior to placement in appropriate university mathematics coursework. Exemptions from the ELM are given below. Students who do not pass the ELM (a score of 50 or higher is required to pass) and do not meet any of the ELM exemptions are required to meet CSUMB's Mathematics Remediation Requirement. Information on the Mathematics Remediation Requirement is given below.

Register for the ELM online
CSUMB now offers online registration.  All registration must be received at least two weeks prior to the actual test date.  Click here to register.

  • A score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of either the College Board SAT or SAT I: Reasoning Test.
  • A score of 550 or above on Level I, IC, II or IIC on either the College Board Mathematics Achievement Test or SAT II: Mathematics Test

  • A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics Examination (Calculus AB or BC)
  • Placement in the "College Ready" category on the Early Assessment Program (EAP) Mathematics taken in conjunction with the 11th grade California Standards Test in High School Mathematics or Algebra II.
  • Placement in the "conditionally exempt" category on the Early Assessment Program (EAP) Mathematics taken in conjunction with the 11th grade California Standards Test in High School Mathematics or Algebra II and grade of C or better in an approved year-long math course taken in your senior year. Approved courses include: Trigonometry and Math Analysis; Pre-Calculus; Calculus; AP Calculus AB; AP Calculus BC; AP Statistics; and or AP Physics.
  • Completion and transfer to the CSU of a college course that satisfies the General Education-Breadth requirement in Quantitative Reasoning, provided such a course was completed with a grade of C or better.

Mathematics Remediation Requirement
The Mathematics Remediation Requirement is only for students who do not pass the ELM and do not meet any of the ELM exemptions list above. Conditions for satisfying this requirement are listed below.

Completion of the MATH 98/99 Course Sequence
A student receiving a letter grade of C or better in the MATH 98/99 sequence will have successfully completed Mathematics Remediation Requirement, and will be able to enroll in baccalaureate-level courses. Some students may only have to complete MATH 99. See the test score tables below.

All remediation must be completed within the first year of enrollment at CSUMB. Failure to complete remediation by the end of a student's first year may result in administrative disqualification and disenrollment from CSUMB.

ELM Score Course Required
50 or above Mathematics Remediation Requirement fulfilled
46 - 49  MATH 99
45 or below MATH 98 and MATH 99
SAT I or SAT II Math Score Course Required
550 or above Mathematics Remediation Requirement fulfilled
530 - 549  MATH 99
529 or below MATH 98 and MATH 99
ACT Math Score Course Required
23 or above Mathematics Remediation Requirement fulfilled
21 - 21  MATH 99
20 or below MATH 98 and MATH 99

There is an appeals process available to students who successfully completed MATH 98 during their first year at CSUMB or Intermediate Algebra in the summer session at a community college with a grade of "C" or better. Please see the Department Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department for more information on the appeals process.

Mathematics Remediation Summer Intensive Workshop
If a student receives scores that do not meet the above Mathematics Remediation Requirement, the student has the opportunity to attend the Mathematics Remediation Summer Intensive Workshop in a final attempt to "assess out" of either MATH 98 or MATH 99 (depending on the exam scores) before the beginning of the Fall Semester. This five-day workshop is held the five days before the first day of classes of the Fall Semester, and includes a review of the material from the MATH 98 and MATH 99 courses. The workshop is concluded with a MATH 98 exam and/or MATH 99 exam that the student must pass in order to assess out of the respective course. If the student does not pass the course exam, he/she must stay enrolled in the MATH 98 or MATH 99 course and meet the remainder of the Mathematics Remediation Requirement.
